Inter-Disciplinary Ethics Applied Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (IDEA CETL)
The University of Leeds is pleased to announce two new PhD studentships for 2009-2010.
STUDENTSHIP INFORMATION
The studentships are tenable for 3yr (f-t) or 5yr (p-t) from September/October 2009. The tuition component will be equivalent to the full EU PhD fee (currently £3.4k p.a. f-t) and the maintenance component will be equivalent to that of the AHRC Doctoral award (2008/09 £12.6k p.a. F-t). In addition, the IDEA CETL offers its PhD students financial support for conference attendance, and PhD students are often given the opportunity to undertake teaching paid at an hourly rate.
The successful applicant will undertake a PhD project in the area of (Inter-Disciplinary ) Applied Ethics broadly construed. The IDEA CETL currently works in Medical Ethics, Engineering Ethics, Business Ethics, Ethics in Biological Sciences, Ethics and Nanotechnology, Media Ethics, Environmental Ethics, Ethics in Sport and Exercise Science, Computing Ethics, Ethics in Dentistry, and Research Ethics. Research proposals in any of those areas are welcomed. The Centre’s staff also have interests in wider topics in moral psychology (esp. desire, emotion, and rationality) and virtue theory, ancient ethics (esp. ELIGIBILITY
It is desirable that applicants have an MA, but those with have a very good first degree in philosophy, or in a discipline relevant to the IDEA CETL and clear aptitude for the study of applied ethics, will also be considered.
CLOSING DATE FOR APPLICATIONS
The closing date for receipt of applications for the studentships is 29th June 2009. Should interviews be held, they are likely to be in the week beginning 13th July.

Applications for the studentships should consist in 6 copies of a CV which includes a 500 word PhD-proposal: applicants should also arrange for 2 academic referees to submit references directly to the Department.

The studentship awards are conditional on admission to study for a PhD in the IDEA CETL. Applicants need not apply for admission prior to application for this studentship. Renewal of the studentship each year is subject to satisfactory progress towards PhD completion.
